Creative Associates International partnered with Creative Frontiers to develop a learning game for Syrian children who have been displaced due to ongoing conflict in Syria. The game which was sponsored by NORAD and USAID through the EduApp4Syria competition aimed to enhance both Arabic literacy and social well being of the children who played the game.
We developed an innovative concept for the game centered around “Katkooti” a cute, magical bird that helps other animals re-learn language which they lost due to a magical disaster. The story line accounts for the loss and pain that these children have suffered and returns a measure of control as they guide Katkooti’s actions while interacting and helping animals of “Mamlakat Alhaywanat” through engaging learning mini-games. The game-play is guided by a triple design goal of good pedagogy, engagement and promotion of well being.
The game was well received by both NORAD and by Syrian refugees who tested it. Players especially appreciated the excellent artwork and the ability of the game to engage children. Parents were happy that children were “collecting knowledge instead of coins” a common trope of similar games. In all the game was well received and was one the top 5 finalists of the EduApp4Syria competition (The only concept to make it to the top 5 from the United states).
